Oceanian War

The Oceanian War was a conflict fought between Oceania and the Pacific Federation circa AC 417.[2]

The conflict is notably remembered as the first "modern" war of the After Calamity Era, as well as the Cascadian National Guard's sole offensive operation to date,[3] and resulted in the supposed fall of the Mercenary Cabal. More infamously, it was a war where the world's fate hung in the balance, and led to the country's devastation by Cascadian hands[4] as well as mercenaries' ostracization.[5]

Background

The Mercenary Cabal, a mastermind behind numerous world events akin to the Federation's own dictatorial control, was revealed according to intel and statements to be planning to turn Oceania into a mercenary state rivaling the Federation.[6] This, combined with the nation itself withdrawing its membership after heightened strains on its geothermal deposits, prompted the Federation to launch an invasion.

History

Under the pretext of threats to internal security and stability, the Federation invaded Oceania. However, they met fierce resistance from Oceanian military forces and mercenaries.[7][8] During this time, Morgan Elizabeth, a Cascadian military officer, was made a liaison of the Federation Peacekeepers[9] including the Cascadian Crimson Team.

The Cascadian Marine Guard Black Eagle Division saw action in this conflict as well. Their CO, Faust, cut down mercenary forces without restraint[1] and spearheaded an artificial famine that weakened Oceanian resistance.[4] Gradually, the tide began to turn against Oceania, and a number of mercenaries, including Klara Rask, began to defect and hunt down their fellow mercenaries, finding survival and work odds better with the Federation.[10]

Faust was recorded absent for the war's final battles,[11] of which the FVN 205-class air battleship Zetec took part, distinguishing itself by engaging hostile airships;[12] fighting ended with the remaining mercenaries being shown leniency,[11] a decision a number of soldiers would resent.[1] In the end, the Federation prevailed, and Oceania was back in Federation hands.

The Cascadians, at an unknown point in the war, learned that the Cabal wanted to outright replace the current world with one of their own image. Their Peacekeeper and best pilot Crimson 1 was significant in preventing their conspiracy from coming to pass. They also discovered a "terrible" finding provocative of universal mercenary veneration and is somehow capable of beginning a world war.[4]

Aftermath and legacy

The war heavily influenced Federation military doctrine, including Cascadia's, whose veterans would be mostly organized underneath the Wild Boar Regiment.[3][7][13] Magadan on the other hand received numerous veterans who over the years became half their Ground Reserve Divisions.[1] Furthermore, more Periphery states had begun joining superpowers like the Federation, while some chose the path of independence.[14]

The Federation, having found blueprints and airframes for the Cabal-designed ACG-01 Chimera in the war's late stages, handed over the blueprints to Cascadia, the country proceeding to produce copies in case they and the Federation itself come into conflict just like Oceania did.[15] On the worldview of Cascadia, however, Oceanians like AWACS Vita would grow prejudiced against them for the immense destruction they wrought on their country compared to the sum total of other Federation forces.[4]

The war would dim public opinion on mercenaries, with their backstab including Rask on certain records, leading to a slow fadeaway of their presence pushed by superpower pressure.[5][16] In general, up until Sicario's presence in the Cascadian Conflict of AC 432, mercenaries like the Cabal Lords' Signatures were thought to have disappeared into history.[17] In light of this, some such as the Thorn Rose Gang held a lust for revenge against the Federation for Oceania,[18] others like Cabal leftovers even sitting idly by for ambitious employers hiring them for a shot at them.[2]

Despite the Cabal's recorded demise, rumors persisted of its survival, well into the Cascadian Conflict where the Federation Navy sent at least one vessel to track them down.[19] In a potentially related development, the Oceania secret became tied to the Cascadian Deal, perhaps to prevent it falling into the wrong hands; in Faust's eyes, it would be made moot by mercenary use of it or the Deal taking effect in any case.[4]

The Cascadian Conflict would begin over similar reasons and be estimated to be thrice as destructive as this conflict.[20] Every veteran officer constituted Independence Force HQ, the Cascadian Independence Force leadership.[4] The Wild Boar Regiment, owing to their experience in this war and ironically eventually coming to rely on mercenaries, noticeably fared better in the early battles than other units who are mostly inexperienced in combat, on top of being led by Elizabeth, an HQ staff member.[13]

Related to the above conflict, Faust, perhaps mentally broken over her own atrocities that the Federation authorized, held the Federation on accountability above hers, in any event seeking atonement for the country's ruin. The war - and later on the Deal - would be a critical factor to her decision to invade Magadan, a convenient cover for her genocidal objective of debellating the Federation polity through burning Magadan's geothermal industry to the ground; on projections (which she succeeded by proxy and portion), such a campaign would bury countless Federation civilians and cities in destructive climate change and geothermal fires.[1][4][11][21]

Behind the scenes

Cut takeoff dialogue from Faust would have expanded that the Federation underwent postwar reparations until AC 419 and occupied the entirety of Oceania until AC 423. It would also have connected the Hunt for the Maester to the conflict on unspecified grounds.
