Federation Ground Forces
The Federation Ground Forces (FG) is the land force branch of the Federation Military Forces.
History
The FG deployed to Oceania during the Oceanian War, bringing in battle-hardened veterans back to countries like the Federation Core States Magadan, half of its Ground Reserve Divisions constituted by those veterans.[1]
Their first actions in the Cascadian Conflict involved seizing Rowsdower Air Force Base from Cascadian Independence Force-aligned National Guard elements. They were unprepared, however, for the PMC Sicario's swift taking and obliteration of their defenses there.[2] Despite this, they still took hold of vital areas like the Chaohord Defense Region,[3] the Solana Communications Array,[4] and Prospero.[5] Solana was especially important as it provided EW support for their war effort and command-and-control.
The FG also simultaneously cornered and pushed CIF forces into a siege line at the Salvemini Vineyards, which however was broken by reinforcements despite hasty attempts to adjust to air defense. They were able to notify Regional HQ of the mercenaries' presence, however, especially with other sorties across the theater occurring at once.[6]
During the Fall of Presidia, the FG relentlessly hunted down retreating CIF units from the capital, and loosened rules of engagement after encountering Cascadian partisans but were told to engage police forces in self-defense due to infighting. They also evacuated civilians to clear a free line of fire in the area but were pinned down by rebel air power, being unable to effectively counter them. They could not summon Crimson Team into the battle due to them being deployed out of country beforehand, and consequently decided to hold position to pursue survivors next week.[7] Over the following weeks, they took numerous vital strongholds as they landed in Cascadia and advanced.
They also unsuccessfully defended the Apodock Fracture and other geothermal facilities, only evacuating civilian personnel while they worked on stabilizing production to avoid excessive damage.[8] Following the capture of the FNS Jerusalem, the FG's coastal emplacements were shelled by it, deteriorating Federation security in Cascadia.[9]
The Ground Forces continued taking losses, such at in the Wensleydale raid,[3] the Solana Array itself and the 1st Defense Battalion in Operation Blackout,[4] and a renewed CIF Offensive Campaign. These setbacks put the Federation on the defensive in-country.[10] In a desperate if misguided measure, they discharged Cascadians from their units and airlifted veterans out to the Federation Core States to reinforce less experienced forces; they were all downed in Operation Guillotine, however.[11]
The FG reassigned defense units to Harkema Industrial Park later on,[12] and retreated through the countryside to Presidia and Prospero, their last major strongholds in the country. To worsen matters, they set up defensive positions gambling on Task Force 1's arrival in-country, but its annihilation resulted in their swift fall,[13] and then followed up tomorrow by an invasion of Magadan. Because Federation business occupied the Periphery and Asia, only the ill-equipped local Ground Reservists were up, and gradually regular Ground Force elements arrived in-country to push out the Cascadian rebels[14] and bring their insurrection to heel once they were finished.[15]
To compensate for their mainland losses, the FG went as far as burning down Grimwood Forest and attempting to shoot down firefighting personnel from the Cascadian Firefighting Corps. This failed, and they focused on dumping as much as possible for equipment and personnel, having presumably lost troops to summary executions. Eventually, they capitulated.[16] While defending Prospero, Regional HQ informed them of a "new strategy" being run for the AO, but obeyed regardless, knowing as well that Crimson Team couldn't be summoned.
They were vaporized when the strategy - revealed to be cordium-tipped cruise missiles launched from an FG mobile artillery battalion[17] - resulted in the Cascadian Calamity Event.[5] At the same time, FG elements were at one of the launch sites - the Magadane Arctic Circle - stopping the Cascadian White Fleet from bombarding Base Station Zero; sadly for them, the missiles, combined with the neutralizer-induced pressure rise meant to prevent mass destruction in the raid's worst-case scenario, began the apocalypse anew.[18]
From then on, all communications in the theater on both sides were cut.[19] Surviving troops took refuge in places such as Brite Fortress, now risen in importance as a safe zone from the new Calamity. The fortress came under assault just as they were preparing to continue their offensive, however, and they were by then weary of the war and only wanted it to end. Following the fortress' fall, other unprepared units were wiped out in surprise attacks or retreated to Presidia.[20]
A small FG contingent was patrolling the now-barely habitable Prospero ruins when it was wiped out in Operation Recall at the same time during a mass retreat.[21] The FG defended the capital valiantly during the Second Battle of Presidia, even going as far as threatening to shoot civilians in the outside presumably for collaborating with the rebels. By the time they were pushed all the way back to the Port Authority Building, a ceasefire was declared, and a tense moment ensued as Federation soldiers rushed to the harbor to leave or be taken prisoner, though some were confused as to whether they should continue the fight. However, the entire Presidian garrison was decimated by Crimson 1 when he triggered the Presidian Disaster save for a handful of survivors including their CO,[22][17] and they came under extreme prejudice following the disaster due to the rebels and mercenaries thinking they were complicit with them even though he went rogue.[23][24]
In total, the FG lost several hundred thousand troops in the war,[25] resulting in a severe depletion of Federation military power.[26]
