Periphery

The Periphery is a category of smaller states in the After Calamity Era usually lacking self-sufficiency in geothermal energy. Some of these states might be powerful in their own right, but many rely on modern technology heavily favoring geothermal energy and cordium, which exists outside of their purview.[1] In general, the Periphery is war-torn and impoverished of energy and resources, being filled with criminal and privateer groups,[2] revolutionaries, guerillas,[3] as well as mercenaries standing in for their implicitly weaker militaries doing their work.[4]

Federation Military Forces enforce the peace around such regions;[5] for example, Federation Peacekeepers are sent to the Periphery maintaining order, dominating resistance around the world,[6] not to mention Task Force 1's ability to lock down entire airspaces for long distances to stop all rebellion within the regions.[7] Morgan Security, however, is proof that the Periphery is not entirely underarmed, having a defense treaty with other non-Federation organizations and supplying people whose contracts are untied from either of the Federation's big two design houses.[8]

These countries often receive aid from great powers/superpowers such as the Federation and Cascadia, though are represented by the latter on the world stage at its capital Presidia, which itself served as a major juncture between the Periphery and the rest of the world.[9][10] When the Cascadian Conflict broke out, many Periphery nations voiced being pro-Cascadian independence, though backed off from direct support to avoid provoking the Federation's vast military might against them.[11] Beforehand, however, some of the Periphery - located in the North American Dustlands - was often in conflict with Cascadia's border communities and military.[12]

Since the Oceanian War, an increasing number of Periphery states began associating with the Federation or bigger superpowers, but some committed to retaining their independence.[1] Over time, more and more of these nations chose the latter option, shaking the balance of the current world order to a degree.[13]

Following the Prospero Disaster during the Cascadian Conflict, Sicario mercenary leader Arnold Frenken recruited reinforcements from the Periphery for Cascadia, bringing back far more than he intended to and finding out that his forces were inspired by the rebellion.[14][15] After the war's disastrous end, the Periphery commenced a worldwide offensive on the now-severely weakened Federation, with Cascadian backing and rallying, opening the door to a potential crusade of vengeance.[16]

Nations

The only known Periphery nation is the Creole Republic, though the East[17] and Equatorial Periphery regions are mentioned.[18]
