Cargo ship

Cargo ships are large transport vessels mainly used to transport cargo and sometimes troops over open waters.

Description

Cargo ships resemble bulk carriers/bulkers and have zero means to defend themselves, and seldom set sail without escorts. They sometimes travel without cargo at all. However, a militarized variant exists, equipped with SAM launchers, enabling relatively potent defensive anti-air firepower. These launchers are stored within hardpoints where the cargo is normally stored.

History

Throughout the After Calamity Era, nations such as the Pacific Federation had used cargo ships to transport vital cargo such as cordium. This made them prime targets for pirates such as the Burlok Privateers to steal and seize.[1] Bulk cargo ships were also present at Harkema Industrial Park, presumably transporting cordium in and out as well.[2] During the Cascadian Conflict, the Cascadian Independence Force used cargo ships to evacuate civilians and troops from Presidia.[3]

The CIF also used the cargo ship CCS Court to rearm and resupply its stolen battleship, the FNS Jerusalem/CIFS Eminent Domain, which would become the flagship of the rebel naval forces.[4] In the same conflict during the CIF Offensive Campaign, as the Federation was pushed on the retreat, it used cargo ships to transport Federation troops through the countryside to Presidia and/or Prospero.[5] The Federation also utilized them to resupply its defenses and transport wounded at Presidia in the late stages of the war, being guarded by the 1st Naval Battlegroup up until early-mid-August AC 432.[6]
