"Go on, come on!"
― Eve

Evelyn London III, callsign Hitman 3/Comic, is a member of Sicario's Hitman Team and a former member of the Cascadian Air Force. Proficient in air combat, she yearns for the fight of her life, with nobody getting in her way; it should be noted her TAC name is a leftover from a personality slightly more jovial.[2][3]

She is one of the four main characters of Project Wingman and one of the player's main wingmen.

Biography

Early life and National Guard service

Evelyn London III was born in Cascadia to an immigrant family. After moving on her own to the Pacific Northwest in search for greatness, she scored top marks in the Federation Air Academy and was fast-tracked to squadron commander and the rank of Major in the Cascadian Air Force sometime between AC 412 and 422. During her service, fellow Air Force pilot J. Griffiths came to know her, along with Academy dropout Peter Kennedy, and she travelled to northern Cascadia, described as harsh by her,[4][5][6] as well as Presidia at one point.[7]

Unfortunately, her career came to an end when she ordered a strike on a pirate camp in Cascadia's Dustlands frontier and failed to call it off in time, leading to the death of an informant. She was dishonorably discharged afterwards and left her country disgraced, drowning her sorrows with drink for several years in the Periphery before being offered a second chance by Sicario, which she gladly took up despite having to adjust to her new mercenary life. Peter, along with flight lead Monarch, joined up with her, and she relegated herself to wingman position as Hitman 3.[3][2][8]

At one point, she and Hitman took a vacation to the Caribbean Sea.[9]

Cascadian Conflict

Pre-war

"This wasn't much of a fight, Galaxy. I think we're fine by my mark."
― Eve during Operation Red Current

Eve took part in a contract with the Creole Republic on December 9, AC 431, mostly sloping around until the last day of the contract the following month. She was unimpressed with the relatively easy Operation Red Current and made a "drop out/surfer" jab at Peter when he commented about spending their remaining time there vacationing, to which he joked about running a beach bar with all of them in tow. She heard of Master Goose Squadron's contract with the Cascadian Independence Force and followed through.[10]

Returning home where the war is

"Never forgot the local religion, huh? [chuckle] “Dust Mother”..."
― Eve on Peter's sarcastic remark on the CIF's reception of them

Eve, while escorting Sicario's convoy over Fresnon Range, engaged Pacific Federation forces. She was impressed by the Federation fighters' performance compared to the Burlok Privateers, and while engaging the airship Espadon, noted that the Federation is already deploying the mother lode on them. She denied knowledge of the Federation's intentions in her former country when asked by Peter.[11]

Eve was focused on taking Rowsdower Air Force Base and recounted her experiences in the region.[4] She also later asked about wine in the Salvemini Vineyards during Operation Water Stable and radioed the Wild Boar Regiment on reinforcing them. Dominic and Peter noticed her keeping up a decent kill pace, wondering if she is trying to become squadron leader again. By the end of the battle, she reassured Peter that Monarch was handling the conflict fine when he displayed signs of anxiousness on taking on such a superpower.[5] She took part in the evacuation of Presidia, not hesitating in shooting down airships over the capital.[7]

Eve took part in Operation Flash Hazard, part of a raid on Federation resource facilities, and had fun blowing up the cordium facilities at Apodock Fracture. She also requested a status report to Dominic Zaitsev on the other raids, and teased him about their usual arrangement of the top performer buying dinner for them. She immediately fled as soon as the Federation Peacekeepers - Crimson Team - arrived at the AO.

Despite having fled the battle with the Peacekeepers, Eve witnessed Monarch stay behind to cover his allies' retreat and take on Crimson alone, damaging one of them enough to force them to retreat. She was surprised at his unusually fierce flying style while taking them on.[12]

All-out war

Monarch and Eve were deployed to the Burning Coast and was surprised by the large number of Federation Navy vessels chasing after the CIFS Eminent Domain, Dominic explaining they are trying to make up for having such a powerful asset slipping from their hands. She radioed the battleship to identify themselves, and in the meantime theorized it was on its shakedown. She also mentioned her botched idea of giving Robin Kuo her absent wingman's spare plane, which Dominic was opposed to citing her lackluster flying.[13] She and Peter stood by as rescue in case their flight lead was downed during his solo raid on the Chaohord Defense Region.[8] During the subsequent raid on the Solana Communications Array, she and Dominic hurled jabs at Peter for complaining about feeling underpaid.[14]

During the Operation Guillotine furball, she helped Peter maintain his focus on the hectic battle and remarked by the end that they survived because they proved themselves better than Crimson Team, who fought them again in a rematch.[15] She participated in the raid on Harkema Industrial Park, quipping that she can see through the dark night and guided Peter through the heavy railgun fire coming from the facility. She and Peter noticed that a number of the secondary explosions are "not normal". She requested intel on the SP-34R to Dominic while fighting it, and noted Monarch was the only Hitman landing hits on the prototype.[16] During Operation Free Agent in Sawaiiki, she took advantage of targets being lined in a straight line and took notice of a lone yacht in the middle of the raid. Near the end of the raid, she and Peter teased Robin over her potential of becoming Hitman 4.[17]

Cataclysm and Deal

While participating in Phase 3 of the CIF Offensive Campaign, Eve bore witness to the Grimwood Forest being set ablaze, and chastised the Federation for "trying to set the world on fire again". She asserted to Dominic that the Cascadian Army is willing to march through the Cascadian Firefighting Corps' water sprays rather than listen to what the firefighters had to say. When the Federation surrendered, she mused that they wasted the environment on a momentary tactical gain.[18] She also discussed with Peter during the liberation of Prospero their plans after the war, whether they'd still be flying with Sicario after all, and what would they do.

When Dominic reported a swarm of cordium-tipped cruise missiles inbound towards Prospero, Robin panicked and wanted out, though Eve assured her they can shoot them all down. However, the Cascadian Calamity Event erupted despite their best efforts, and Eve described the event as "looking like the apocalypse". She and her wingmen follows Dominic back to Rowsdower,[9] intent on packing up her personal effects and getting out of Cascadia as quick as they can. Soon, however, they came across Klara Rask again along with the now-Federation-aligned Master Goose Squadron, and decided to engage despite being low on fuel. It was during the fight that Hitman was accused of secretly wanting the CIF to win the war and had their identities leaked by Rask, who was eventually shot down and killed along with Master Goose.

Eve, fearing everyone else in Sicario killed by the new Calamity, declared Monarch the new "boss" when Arnold Frenken himself went on the radio. They were counting survivors, with Eve requesting their personal effects be loaded, when Griffiths came and requested they continue their contract. Hitman reluctantly listened to him, Eve saying at first he was making a big mistake and Peter bringing her old rank up. After sitting out Frenken's end of the Deal, Eve declared they wanted nothing to do with the Deal and were leaving Cascadia to its fate, being "dead men walking". She did not believe Griffiths' promise of amnesty within their former country; Peter, however, reminded her that he and Monarch were still wanted people, convincing her to listen to reason. After being surprised by their side of the Deal, Eve remarked that what they were offered, though worth fighting for, wouldn't undo the grim situation they were in. They relocated to Highway 34, knowing Rowsdower would no longer be hospitable soon.[6]

Persevering to the end

Eve participated in a raid on Brite Fortress, Dominic telling her they lack the manpower to capture it for the day. In addition, Peter mused that the Deal's conditions did not sit well with him anymore, but Eve reminded him that it was well worth finishing their contract.[19] She engaged Crimson Team one final time during Operation Recall over the Prospero ruins, calling out Crimson 1 for preaching about his side being the "sheepdogs". After the furball was over, Eve told an exhausted Peter, having done a furious rant towards the now-supposedly deceased Peacekeeper, to hang in there, as the war was now almost over.[20]

Eve took part in the final battles of the war, including Operation Welder and the Second Battle of Presidia. They were overwhelmed by the 1st Naval Battlegroup's sheer numbers when Frenken returned with his reinforcements and assisted them in sinking them.[21]. During the fierce latter battle, she and Peter remarked the Federation was hopeless in defending against their invasion, and that the city will be very different once they were done. She was just as surprised as her wingman when the Cascadian Conflict Ceasefire was called in, but was shot down by Crimson 1 right before the Presidian Disaster.[22] She was able to eject safely, though presumably injured her leg upon landing, and transmitted a beacon for her other downed wingman to find. Peter found her later, Eve almost mistaking him for an enemy soldier, and she pondered the world was now undergoing huge ramifications with "everything going to hell". They decided to disappear for a while without anything to do with future affairs, assured Monarch would secure the Deal for them.[23]

Post-Cascadian Conflict

Eve, along with the rest of Hitman Team, remained at large post-war, with Cascadian citizens being issued a search warrant on them to report their findings to MPs,[24] possibly to supplement their military again given its decimation by the war's end.[25]

Personality, traits, and relationships

Contrary to her TAC name and red-black clown emblem, Eve doesn't have much of a sense of humor, and instead is a no-nonsense pilot who cares most about getting the job done and holding her bottom line. Though slightly more humorous in the past, if perhaps just as hot-headed as she is, her dishonorable discharge took such a massive toll on her that perhaps she even lost her faith in the Dust Mother (adding another layer to her contrast with Peter), but over the course of the Cascadian Conflict, had it restored.[5] Regardless, she kept her battle ingenuity even as a drinker, having dealt with her alcoholism ever since joining Sicario.[3]

She is not an environmentalist, but somewhat cares about nature, given her birthplace.[18] Her background is basically the polar opposite of Peter's, being a lower-class girl and an overachiever who may as well be Sicario's second best pilot below Monarch's pedigree.[3][2] She finds little time for pep talk,[4] is not used to large urban areas, and has a hard time taking on airships, preferring naval ships instead,[7] partly because of them still paying out big while also being easier for her to sink.[13] Despite her search for challenge, however, she folds when faced with ace pilots well beyond her skill level, such as Federation Peacekeepers.[12]

Based on her quip prior to rescuing the Eminent Domain, she seems to dislike or have no interest in fishing. She feels Robin is better off as a WSO, considering her feat as the only one able to stand Monarch's flying and Frenken not taking people taking up new posts lightly. Her banter with others tends to be drier because of her demeanor.[13] She believes in Monarch's abilities to the point she wouldn't accept anyone like Peter as flight lead.[8] She likes taunting the enemy and proving herself and her friends superior to them, but cares for the well-being of her friends, even comforting the war-weary Peter near the end of the conflict.[17]

Following her identity leak, she developed something of a daredevil demeanor, often taunting her opponents to shoot her out of the sky. She was steeled and certain about doing what they had to in order to secure the Deal.

Etymology

"Comic," beside its obvious ironic characteristic meaning, refers to a ruler's court jester in the past. This denotes her as the only member of Hitman Team whose TAC name is not a reference to a political position. She and Circus are also the only Sicario members with comedian-themed callsigns.

"Evelyn" is derived from "Eve," meaning "life," and also means "pleasant" in Celtic. See London family for an explanation of her surname.

Behind the scenes

Matthew Nguyen expressed regret that compared to Diplomat's gradual transition from a coolheaded fighter pilot to an unstable, war-weary soldier, Comic's arc, which was intended to show her degenerating from a by-the-book soldier to a primal and aggressive death seeker, was rather minimal in comparison, reduced to covering the latter trait.[26]
